Ania Safonova was born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1978 to a musical family. She started playing the violin at the age of five and made her concerto debut just two years later with the Omsk Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1990 she emigrated with her family to Israel, later continuing her studies at the Royal College of Music, London. Winner of many prizes and awards, Ania made her Wigmore Hall debut at in 2000, returning in 2007 for a recital promoted by the Kirkman Concerts Society.
Ania is currently Associate Concert Master of the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Between 2001 and 2006, she was Associate Leader of the Halle Orchestra, with which she also appeared as a soloist. She has played as guest leader with many orchestras, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Ulster Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Radio Orchestra.
A busy chamber musician, Ania frequently guests with the London Bridge Ensemble and also with numerous other groups. She has performed at several festivals including Wye Valley, Plush, Potton, Kerry, Ponte de Lima in Portugal and Bullawayo (Zimbabwe).
Ania plays on a violin by Gennaro Gagliano, generously on loan to her from the Tate Tompkin Trust.
